Members of The American Legion Family may be eligible for accidental death coverage without paying a premium. LegionCare is a benefit offered through the Legionnaire Insurance Trust and participating American Legion Departments.
The program is available to eligible members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of The American Legion who remain in good standing. The Legionnaire Insurance Trust pays for the coverage on the member’s behalf, but members must confirm their enrollment before it becomes active.
Two Levels of Accident Coverage
LegionCare provides two benefit amounts based on where and why a covered accident occurred.
A member’s beneficiary may receive $5,000 when the member dies from a covered accident connected to official Legion business. Coverage applies while traveling to or from the activity as well as while participating in it.
The plan provides a $1,000 benefit when an enrolled member dies in another covered accident. The Legionnaire Insurance Trust lists incidents that occur at home, at work, in a car, while traveling, or while on vacation as examples. The benefit is paid to the member’s beneficiary even when other insurance policies are also in place.
Enrollment Is Required
Joining or renewing membership in a Legion Family organization does not automatically activate LegionCare. Members must complete the confirmation process separately.
Enrollment also allows the member to select a beneficiary. Keeping that information current can help prevent delays if a claim must be filed. Members may need to review their selection after a marriage, divorce, death, or another change within the family.
Those who complete enrollment can download a Certificate of Coverage for their state of residence. Members should review the certificate to see when the benefit takes effect, what types of accidents may qualify, and which records a beneficiary may need to provide after the member’s death.
Coverage Is Limited to Accidental Death
LegionCare is not the same as a standard life insurance policy. It applies only when a death results from an accident covered under the plan. It generally does not pay when a member dies from illness, disease, natural causes, or a medical condition.
Other restrictions may apply when a death involves self-inflicted injury, intoxication, drug use, war, military or combat service, professional racing, or certain types of air travel. Infections are also generally excluded, although the policy contains limited exceptions involving contaminated food and infections caused by an accidental external wound.
