Until Dawn 2 will launch Jan. 28, 2027, on PlayStation 5, with a new trailer showing more of the sequel’s cast, setting, and the decisions players will face.
Firesprite Games announced the release date during PlayStation’s Sept. 3 State of Play. The trailer follows Dead True, a group of paranormal YouTubers whose search for something supernatural begins at Blackwood Sanatorium, a location familiar to players of the original game.
The crew is filming an episode about the events that took place there 12 years earlier when new intern Izzy, played by Sarah Catherine Hook, discovers something that sends the investigation in a different direction. The story later moves to HorrorCon in Sydney, where the group meets Yoona, played by Gia Kim, who survived a supernatural attack and warns them about Akishima Island.
The remote South Pacific island was abandoned after a luxury resort mysteriously closed in the 1970s and will serve as the main setting for much of the sequel.
Until Dawn 2 tells a standalone story with a new cast, but the decisions that defined the original game are returning. Conversations, relationships, and choices made during dangerous moments can change what happens later and determine which characters make it through the night.
The trailer offers several examples of how those decisions can send the story in different directions. Owen, played by Dacre Montgomery, receives a signal connected to his missing friend Nate and must decide whether to continue following his trail or cross an unstable bridge to investigate a nearby bar.
Another scene puts Mina, played by Camila Senna, in the middle of a ritual demanded by the crew’s network. Players must decide whether to sacrifice the group’s chicken or refuse and put Mina at risk instead.
As in the original Until Dawn, the consequences may not be obvious when a decision is made. A choice that appears minor at the time could affect relationships, change what happens later, or determine whether another character survives.
Firesprite is developing the story with AdHoc Studio, the team behind Dispatch. The developers say relationships between the characters will have a larger role in the sequel, with smaller interactions capable of influencing events later in the story.
Peter Stormare will also return as Dr. Hill, one of the original game’s most recognizable characters. His role in the sequel has not been fully explained, but the new trailer confirms he will once again be part of the story.
Preorders open Sept. 10 for the Standard and Digital Deluxe editions. Both include Dr. Hill-themed bonuses, including his classic Until Dawn outfit, an Akishima Island vacation outfit, and collectible Dr. Hill bobbleheads hidden throughout the game.
The Digital Deluxe Edition includes additional outfits for all eight members of Dead True and a mode called Diorama of Death. After unlocking character deaths during the story, players can return to those scenes and view them from different angles.
The original Until Dawn debuted on PlayStation 4 in 2015 and became known for its Butterfly Effect. Decisions made early in the game could affect events hours later, while keeping every member of the cast alive required players to think beyond individual encounters.
Firesprite first announced Until Dawn 2 in June and confirmed that it would follow a new group of characters rather than continue directly with the original cast. The latest trailer shows how Blackwood Sanatorium connects the sequel to the first game before the story moves to Akishima Island and its own mystery.
Until Dawn 2 launches Jan. 28, 2027, exclusively on PlayStation 5. Preorders begin Sept. 10.
