Shrek 2

The 2004 Shrek 2 video game is getting a remaster, bringing Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and Puss in Boots back to consoles and PC more than two decades after the original release.

Developer and publisher Aspyr announced Shrek 2 Remastered on October 20, confirming a November 10, 2026, release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The original game launched in May 2004 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC, alongside the DreamWorks animated film. Unlike many movie-based games from that era, Shrek 2 became known for its multiplayer gameplay, allowing friends to work together as different characters from the franchise.

Aspyr is bringing back that experience with updated graphics, redesigned textures, improved cutscenes, and support for 4K resolution on compatible systems. The remaster also includes an updated interface and several features that weren’t available in the original.

Players can explore familiar locations from the movie, including Shrek’s swamp and the kingdom of Far Far Away. Along the way, they’ll fight enemies, solve puzzles, and encounter familiar characters from the franchise.

Each playable character has different abilities, and players can switch between them whenever needed. Some challenges require a particular character’s skills, while others involve fighting enemies or completing objectives together.

One of the biggest additions is expanded multiplayer support. The original console game allowed up to four people to play locally, but the remaster adds online cooperative play. Friends can also combine local and online players in the same session.

A new Photo Mode lets players capture screenshots and adjust how their characters appear. Aspyr is also including a Cheats Menu for those who want to experiment with different ways to play.

The announcement itself had some fun with another anticipated video game. Rather than releasing a traditional trailer, Aspyr parodied the marketing for Grand Theft Auto VI, using a similar trailer style to introduce the returning characters.

Shrek 2 Remastered will cost $29.99, with digital preorders discounted to $26.99 for a limited time. The PlayStation discount requires a PlayStation Plus subscription.

The remaster also arrives ahead of Shrek 5, scheduled to reach theaters on June 30, 2027, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz returning to voice Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona.

Preorders are available through Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo.
