The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Early Access Beta is now live, opening the first of two testing weekends ahead of the game’s Oct. 23 release.
The beta opened Friday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. Pacific, following Call of Duty: NEXT, where Activision and Infinity Ward showed more of the maps, modes, weapons, progression, and other features coming to Modern Warfare 4. Early access runs through Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. Pacific.
Players who preordered or prepurchased the Standard or Vault Edition can participate in the first weekend on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Battle.net. Players who received an early access beta code through an eligible promotion can also join. Nintendo Switch 2 is not included in the first weekend.
Those who are willing to wait another week will not need to buy anything first. The Open Beta begins Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. Pacific and will be available to everyone on the same platforms, along with Nintendo Switch 2. It closes Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. Pacific.
This year’s beta goes beyond the usual multiplayer preview. Players can try a full campaign mission before launch for the first time in Call of Duty beta history.
The mission, titled “Entrenched,” places players in a large-scale assault centered on a strategically important nuclear power station. Friendly infantry and armored vehicles take part in the battle, giving players an early look at the campaign’s weapons, movement, and combat systems before campaign early access begins Oct. 16 for eligible digital preorders.
Multiplayer remains a major part of the first weekend, with five core 6v6 maps available during Weekend One. Rooftops takes the fighting across snow-covered buildings in New York, while Silkworm is set in a South Korean shopping district. Transit 213 moves the battle to an overgrown bus depot in India, Cachette centers on a hideout near a French rail terminal, and Lotus is set in a damaged Korean fishing village.
Six core multiplayer modes are available during Weekend One: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Search and Destroy, and the new Inflation mode.
Inflation changes the usual approach to eliminations by having players collect cash from defeated opponents. As their wealth grows, the richest players become High Value Targets for the opposing team.
Players can also try Kill Block, a new combat space that reconfigures itself every two rounds. The mode supports traditional 3v3 Gunfight as well as a new 10v10 version, with randomized shared loadouts changing as the match continues.
Modern Warfare 4 also introduces an expanded movement system, and the beta includes a Mobility Course where players can learn the new mechanics before entering multiplayer. The course covers movement techniques such as Mantle Slides, Mantle Steering, climbing jumps, pipe movement, and moving or aiming while hanging from a ledge.
Weekend One has a player level cap of 20. Ranking up unlocks weapons, equipment, Perks, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks, and cosmetic rewards. Create a Class becomes available at Level 4, while reaching Level 20 unlocks the “Dread Tiger” Operator Skin for Reece.
The level cap will rise to 30 when the Open Beta begins Aug. 28. Players who continue through the second weekend can earn three more beta rewards, including the “Beta Forged” weapon blueprint for the Han 86 assault rifle at Level 30. Cosmetic beta rewards earned during the testing period will carry into the full game, although player rank, weapon unlocks, and other gameplay progression will reset once the beta ends.
Weekend Two will bring another major addition when Call of Duty: Warzone joins the beta. Players will be able to try Resurgence on Zodiac, a new map set around a drone assembly and manufacturing complex with offices, rooftops, tunnels, and shoreline areas.
Players interested in joining the Early Access Beta can download the separate Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta client through their platform’s digital storefront. Those without an early access code or preorder can preload the Open Beta beginning Aug. 26 before public access starts Aug. 28.
