Crazy Taxi: World Tour

Crazy Taxi is coming back, and this time the ride is not just about beating the clock.

SEGA has announced Crazy Taxi: World Tour, a new game in the arcade driving series planned for 2027. The game is expected to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

For longtime fans, Crazy Taxi is one of those games that brings back memories of arcades, living rooms, and friends taking turns trying to beat each other’s scores. The original was simple to understand but hard to master. Players picked up passengers, raced through traffic, cut across sidewalks, and tried to earn as much money as possible before time ran out.

The new game keeps that fast, chaotic taxi-driving style, but adds multiplayer so players can compete with friends and others online. SEGA has said Crazy Taxi: World Tour will include a story mode, classic arcade-style play, vehicle customization, new maps, missions, and five cities to drive through.

That makes the return feel less like a simple throwback and more like a chance to bring people together again. The original game was already fun to watch, with players flying through traffic, jumping off ramps, cutting through crowded streets, and trying to deliver passengers before the clock ran out. With online multiplayer, those moments can now happen with friends in the same match instead of just watching from the side.

Series creator Kenji Kanno has said multiplayer was something fans asked for back in 1999, but the technology was not there yet. Now, more than 25 years later, SEGA has a chance to bring that idea to life.

Crazy Taxi: World Tour also brings back Axel, one of the familiar drivers from the series. The story reportedly begins after masked villains steal his taxi, sending him on a new adventure across different locations. The game is also expected to bring back the high-energy music and loud arcade feeling that helped make the original stand out.

For gaming communities, the multiplayer feature may be the biggest reason to pay attention. That kind of game can be a good fit for casual game nights, voice chats, friendly competition, and players who want something they can jump into without a long setup.

There has also been some criticism over SEGA’s use of generative AI during development. SEGA has said AI was used as a support tool and not for voice performances, but the reaction shows how closely fans are watching the return of older franchises.

Still, the return of Crazy Taxi has people talking. If World Tour can keep the loud, fast, arcade feeling of the original while giving players a fun reason to play together, it could become more than a nostalgia release. It could become a new way for friends and gaming communities to reconnect around a classic series.
