Warner Bros. Games Joins Paramount Games Studio After Skydance Merger

Warner Bros. Games + Paramount Games Studio

Warner Bros. Games has a new corporate home after Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on Oct. 6.

The gaming division is being combined with Paramount Games Studio, putting developers behind Mortal Kombat, Hogwarts Legacy, Batman: Arkham, and LEGO games under the same operation as Paramount and Skydance’s existing gaming teams.

VGC reported that Warner Bros. Games adds several established studios to the group. Avalanche Software developed Hogwarts Legacy. NetherRealm Studios is best known for Mortal Kombat. Rocksteady Studios built the Batman: Arkham series, while TT Games has spent years working on LEGO games. WB Games Montreal and WB Games Boston are also part of the move.

Adding Warner Bros. Games gives Paramount Games Studio a much larger group of developers and franchises. Tony Driscoll will lead the combined gaming operation. He has been running Paramount Games Studio since it was created earlier this year and previously held senior roles at Epic Games, Warner Bros., and Disney.

In June, Paramount formed Paramount Games Studio by combining its gaming business with Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media, with projects including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game and Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.

Skydance now has development teams connected to franchises including Mortal Kombat, Batman, Harry Potter and LEGO games, as well as Paramount properties such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SpongeBob SquarePants and Star Trek.

No new games were announced as part of the move, and Warner Bros. Games has not announced any cancellations or redirects of its current projects.

Driscoll said his priority will be meeting teams across the new organization. He described the company’s games as another way for people to spend time inside its entertainment worlds and build communities around them.

The larger Skydance company now includes Warner Bros., HBO, CBS, CNN, and other major entertainment businesses. The company is also targeting at least $6 billion in cost savings within three years, although that goal applies across the entire company and not specifically to its gaming division. Paramount announced the completed acquisition.

That leaves plenty of questions about what happens next for Warner Bros. Games.

Warner Bros. Games is now part of Paramount and Skydance’s gaming business, while its studios remain in place under the larger organization for now. Paramount had already said earlier this year that gaming would become a bigger part of its entertainment strategy. Paramount Games outlined that strategy when the studio was formed.

The teams behind Mortal Kombat, Hogwarts Legacy, Batman, and LEGO games are now part of the same gaming operation as Paramount and Skydance. What Skydance decides to do with that lineup will be the next thing to watch.
