Hiring Our Heroes Can Help Service Members Break Into the Gaming Industry

U.S. Air Force Veteran speaks with a recruiter during the Hiring Our Heroes Career Expo at Luke Air Force Base.

Breaking into the gaming industry can be difficult when a military résumé does not immediately look like game-development experience.

Hiring Our Heroes is one way Service Members and Veterans can start making that connection. The national workforce program works with hundreds of employers and provides fellowships, hiring events, professional training, networking, and other career resources for the military community.

Electronic Arts is one of the gaming companies participating in the program. EA currently lists Hiring Our Heroes as one of its career pathways and describes itself as a host company.

The partnership has already led to jobs inside the gaming industry.

EA previously shared the stories of military professionals who used Hiring Our Heroes before joining Ripple Effect, the EA studio working on the Battlefield franchise. One participant, Madison Daugherty, completed a three-month fellowship with the Battlefield team before being hired full-time.

The program is not limited to people with programming or game-design backgrounds.

Military experience in logistics, intelligence, leadership, communications, project management, cybersecurity, operations, and other fields can translate into jobs throughout a game company. Studios also employ producers, product managers, analysts, marketers, recruiters, security specialists, community managers, and people working in business operations.

Hiring Our Heroes’ Corporate Fellowship Program is designed for transitioning Service Members. It is a Department of Defense SkillBridge program that places participants with civilian employers for 12 weeks. Applicants must be on active duty or transition leave and generally need to be within 180 days of leaving military service.

The program operates across the United States, with locations and host companies varying based on availability.

The next currently listed Corporate Fellowship cohort begins May 3, 2027, with an application packet deadline of Feb. 11. Hiring Our Heroes also says applicants who miss a regular deadline may still be considered for an off-cycle placement when their transition timeline allows it.

Veterans who have already separated can still use Hiring Our Heroes career resources. Its hiring events and other programs connect Veterans, transitioning Service Members, and military spouses with employers recruiting across the country.

EA also continues to list open positions across its studios, including Ripple Effect. Prospective applicants can view current opportunities through the company’s careers page.

A military background may not look like the traditional route into gaming, but the industry needs many of the same skills Veterans used while serving. Hiring Our Heroes can help translate that experience into civilian opportunities and connect Service Members with companies already looking for military talent.
