The American Legion continues to provide Veterans and military families with assistance through a wide range of programs tied to benefits, healthcare, employment, education, and transition support. While the organization is widely recognized for its advocacy efforts, one of its largest areas of impact remains its Veterans Services division.

Through accredited service officers, local posts, and national programs, the American Legion helps Veterans navigate systems that can often feel complicated or overwhelming after military service. Many of these services are offered free of charge and are designed to help Veterans better understand and access the benefits they earned during service.

VA Claims and Benefits Assistance

One of the organization’s most widely used services is assistance with VA disability claims and benefits. The American Legion has accredited Veteran Service Officers trained to help Veterans file claims, submit appeals, gather documentation, and communicate with the VA.

Veterans often seek help with disability compensation, healthcare enrollment, survivor benefits, education programs, and pension-related issues. Service officers also assist veterans who may have been denied benefits or need support understanding changing VA requirements.

Unlike private claims companies that charge fees, accredited American Legion representatives provide assistance at no cost to Veterans and their families.

More information about VA claims support is available through the American Legion Veterans Benefits and Services Division.

Healthcare Support and Advocacy

Healthcare access remains one of the largest concerns facing many Veterans, particularly those dealing with service-connected injuries, chronic illness, or mental health conditions.

The American Legion regularly works with Veterans to help them better understand VA healthcare eligibility, treatment options, and available programs. The organization also monitors issues tied to wait times, staffing shortages, and access to specialized care within the VA system.

Mental health support continues to receive increased attention. Programs and outreach efforts tied to Veteran suicide prevention, peer support, PTSD awareness, and wellness education have become a larger part of the organization’s overall mission.

Through initiatives like Be The One, the American Legion encourages Veterans, families, and communities to recognize warning signs and stay connected with Veterans who may be struggling.

Career and Employment Assistance

Transitioning from military service into civilian employment can be difficult for many Veterans, especially when translating military experience into private-sector careers.

The American Legion supports Veterans through career assistance programs, employment resources, resume guidance, and hiring events. In many communities, local posts also connect Veterans with employers, apprenticeship opportunities, and workforce development programs.

The organization has continued supporting efforts to improve Veteran hiring opportunities while promoting recognition of military leadership and technical experience within civilian industries.

Education and Transition Resources

Education support is another major part of the organization’s Veterans Services efforts. Veterans and dependents often seek guidance related to GI Bill benefits, vocational training, certification programs, and continuing education opportunities.

The American Legion also works with Veterans transitioning out of service by helping connect them with community resources, counseling services, and local support networks. These programs are intended to help Veterans navigate major life changes that can occur after separation from the military.

For younger Veterans entering the workforce or returning to school, access to mentorship and local community support can play an important role during the adjustment process.

Support at the Local Level

Much of the organization’s Veterans Services work happens at the local level through American Legion posts and departments across the country. Local representatives often help veterans connect with county Veteran service offices, healthcare providers, financial assistance programs, and housing resources.

Because needs vary from community to community, local posts frequently tailor their support around the Veterans they serve. Some locations focus heavily on claims assistance and healthcare navigation, while others prioritize outreach, transition support, or employment assistance.

Volunteers and service officers also play a major role in helping older Veterans, disabled Veterans, and surviving family members who may need additional support navigating government systems.

Continuing Support for Veterans and Families

For many Veterans, understanding available benefits and navigating support systems can become a long-term process. The American Legion’s Veterans Services programs continue working to simplify that process while helping Veterans and military families connect with available resources.

From VA claims assistance to healthcare guidance and employment support, these programs remain one of the organization’s most direct forms of service to the Veteran community.
