Xbox may be taking a hard look at the future of Marvel’s Blade, one of its most talked-about upcoming Marvel games, according to new reporting from The Verge.

The report says Microsoft is preparing another round of changes across its Xbox gaming division, with layoffs, studio closures, game cancellations, and possible studio sales all being considered. One project reportedly part of that discussion is Marvel’s Blade, the vampire-hunting action game in development at Arkane Lyon.

Still, the game has not been officially canceled. Microsoft, Bethesda, Marvel, and Arkane have not announced that the game is ending. Marvel’s official page continues to list Marvel’s Blade as being in development by Bethesda and Arkane Lyon. At this point, it is a reported possibility, not a confirmed cancellation.

The game was first revealed in 2023 and immediately drew attention because of the character and the studio behind it. Arkane is known for games like Dishonored and Deathloop, which built loyal followings through style, atmosphere, player choice, and unusual world design.

Blade also seemed like a natural fit for that type of studio. He is one of Marvel’s darker characters, tied to vampires, hunters, and supernatural danger. That opened the door for a Marvel game with a different tone, especially compared with the brighter superhero games players usually see.

The bigger issue appears to be cost. Major games can take years to make, and delays often add millions to a project before players ever get a release date. The Verge reports that Marvel’s Blade had slipped internally and was running over budget. If that is accurate, it may explain why the game is being reviewed during a wider look at Xbox’s spending.

It would be a disappointing turn for Xbox fans. Marvel’s Blade looked like a chance for the platform to have a major single-player Marvel game of its own. PlayStation has found success with superhero games like Spider-Man, and many players hoped Blade could give Xbox something darker, stylish, and different.

The situation also says a lot about where the gaming industry is right now. A famous character and a respected studio are not always enough to protect a project when costs rise. Publishers are watching budgets closely and focusing on games they believe can justify the investment.

Until Xbox, Bethesda, or Arkane gives an official update, Marvel’s Blade remains in uncertain territory. Fans should not treat it as canceled, but the report gives them a reason to watch what Microsoft does next.
